Moving and Transition
Here are a few ideas for helping your child cope with moving and transition:
- Involve your child early in the transition process. Communicate clearly and do not overemphasize the positives. Moving is hard no matter what benefits come from it.
- Take time to listen to your child. Provide opportunities for them to express grief for what they are losing in the move.
- Help your child develop an awareness and appreciation for their multicultural lifestyle.
- Set aside family time and establish family traditions to give a sense of stability.
- Develop meaningful relationships in every community that you live in, no matter how short your stay.
My Child's Strengths
Sometimes as a child struggles in school, we forget to recognize the wonderful uniqueness and strengths of the child. Be sure to help your child identify and appreciate some of their strengths:
PERSONAL - kindness, curiosity, creativity, thoughtfulness, resiliency, empathy
SOCIAL - being a good listener, following rules, being truthful, being a good friend, resisting peer pressure, respecting personal space
LANGUAGE - strong speaker, expressive, strong vocabulary, can communicate thoughts clearly,
LITERACY - love to read or write, vivid imagination, advanced vocabulary
MATH AND LOGIC - mental math, can sort/count/organize well, solve puzzles and problems
OTHER - it may be music, sports, arts, or a wide range of other interests
There are many, many more strengths, not listed here. Just because a child doesn't know their strengths yet, doesn't mean they don't have them!
