*services that you can expect from international school counselors*
Individual and Small Group Counseling
Students may be referred to meet individually with a counselor, or to join a small counseling group. This counseling service is intended to be brief and supportive. School-based counseling is not intended to be long term, or to be for serious mental disorders. If a mental disorder is suspected, or a student is not making expected progress, the counselor may refer for outside therapy or other support. The focus of counseling may include study skills, stress management, coping with change and transition, or emotion regulation, among other topics.
Consultation
Parents and teachers can consult with a counselor to help determine what other supports are available in the community and what next steps might be appropriate for helping a child.
Classroom Counseling Lessons
Students receive classroom guidance lessons from the counselor, which are developmentally appropriate lessons focused on social, emotional, career, academic, and global perspective development.
Crisis and Responsive Services
Counselors are trained to respond to crisis situations and resolve conflict. In regards to conflict resolution and challenging behaviors, many schools have an approach of restorative practice. See a summary of the restorative practice model below*:
